Women's Divorce Insights: Closing the Gender Pay Gap
Hi there! Rhonda here, Certified Divorce Financial Analyst ® and your trusted guide through the financial storm of divorce. Today, we're diving into a topic that affects women both in and out of divorce—closing the gender pay gap.
Inspired by Rohshann Pilla's insightful article, These 3 Strategies Could Actually Help Close the Gender Pay Gap, let's explore those strategies and dive deeper into how they intersect with the world of women’s divorce. But we won't stop there—I'll also share three additional divorce-specific strategies to empower you on your journey to financial equality post-divorce.
Ready? Let’s dive in! ✨
👉 Gender Pay Gap Strategy #1: Equal Pay
In her article, Rohshann's shining a light on the age-old problem of unequal pay—women earning only 82 cents for every dollar men earn. And if you're Black or Latina, that gap's even wider. Now, how do we fix this? Rohshann suggests that industry leaders ditch the old salary history and start paying folks based on what the roles are worth.
And when it comes to divorce, don't let your ex shortchange you, either. Fight for what's rightfully yours, girlfriend! Demand fair compensation for your hard work in and out of the house and make sure those financial cards are laid out on the table.
In BRIDGE™, I teach women how to advocate for a fair settlement using my signature ANOT Method. This negotiation approach shifts from avoidance and victimization to confidence and strategic asking. It’s important to note, though—in divorce, negotiation isn't just about money. It can include other valuable benefits, such as a flexible schedule.
Remember, advocating for equal pay and negotiating your divorce settlement share a common thread—asserting your worth and demanding what you deserve. Standing up for fair compensation sets the stage for financial empowerment and equality. So, stand tall, know your value, and don't settle for less!
👉 Gender Pay Gap Strategy #2: Remote Work
Remote work—sounds like a dream, right? Well, not if it’s also stacking the odds against us ladies. Turns out, we're the ones more likely to be working from home, which isn’t always great for climbing that career ladder. Not fair, if you ask me.
So, what does Rohshann suggest we do?
“Remote work is a better option for many people, not just mothers, and should be offered to all employees without jeopardizing their career trajectory. As leaders, we have an obligation to ensure equity across all employees—no matter where they work from and what parental or other personal responsibilities they may have.”
Amen, sister. 🙌
Embracing remote work can also help manage other post-divorce costs—such as gasoline, wear and tear on the car, or even dining out. It's a practical solution that not only promotes work-life balance but also supports financial stability post-divorce.
👉 Gender Pay Gap Strategy #3: Career Progression
In my experience, I've observed that women often don't receive the recognition they deserve for pausing their careers to support their families. Many of my clients are well-educated and wicked smart, yet their sacrifices go unnoticed in divorce proceedings. Unfortunately, most courts overlook these contributions, making it a constant battle for fair treatment.
After divorce, women find themselves needing to make up for lost ground, which puts them on an uneven playing field.
To help bridge the gap, Rohshann talks about the power of diverse networks, and I’m here for it! Allyship, sponsorship—call it what you want, but having folks in your corner is a must for moving up that career ladder.
In divorce, the same applies. Surround yourself with women who've got your back. Seek out mentors and professionals who get what you're going through—like a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst ®! 'Cause when life throws you a curveball, you're gonna want a whole squad cheering you on to financial victory.

Now, these 3 strategies are a fantastic start. But, as a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst ®, I’ve got a few more to share that specifically apply to women’s divorce (and securing a fair divorce settlement!):
👉 Women’s Divorce Strategy: Financial Literacy and Education
Divorce can leave women financially vulnerable. It's crucial to empower yourself with financial literacy and education to navigate the complexities of divorce proceedings effectively. Understanding your rights and responsibilities—from asset division to alimony and child support—can make a significant difference. After all, knowledge is power, especially when it comes to divorce!
Unfortunately, many women are intentionally kept in the dark during divorce. I've witnessed this scenario repeatedly—spouses hiding assets, undervaluing businesses, and doing everything they possibly can to misrepresent the value owed to their wives. In one case, a spouse even lied about having a pension. Fortunately, we helped uncover the truth—a pension worth $120K—using our signature BRIDGE™ Method and held him accountable.
The lesson here? You simply can't negotiate effectively without a complete understanding of your financial situation. And that's exactly where we come in. At the Women’s Financial Wellness Center, this is our specialty, girlfriend. 💅
By providing you with a comprehensive picture of your finances, we empower you to negotiate confidently and secure a fair divorce settlement. This lays the groundwork for a future of financial independence and stability.

👉 Women’s Divorce Strategy: Employment Reintegration and Skill Development
Returning to the workforce post-divorce can be—well, pretty overwhelming. But hey, with the right support, it becomes much more manageable.
Invest in programs that help you reintegrate into the workforce and develop your professional skills. Think of it as dusting off your skills and leveling them up by seeking new certifications or accreditations.
Update that resume, explore training opportunities, and start networking with industry folks. When you invest in yourself, you're setting the stage for career growth and economic empowerment.

👉 Women’s Divorce Strategy: Negotiating Equitable Alimony and Child Support
This last one is absolutely crucial for your financial well-being post-divorce. Don't let your ex take the lion's share simply because you weren't the “breadwinner.” Your contributions matter. Without your sacrifices, his success wouldn't exist.
So, negotiate from a place of empowerment, ensuring your divorce settlement accounts for your contributions and needs. And yes, it should also align with your lifestyle and future goals. Don't settle for less than you deserve—fight for financial security and peace of mind.
You see, closing the gender pay gap extends well into the world of women’s divorce. By adopting these strategies, women like you can take giant steps toward financial empowerment and leveling the playing field. 💪
